He glances at you and chuckles. ‘You’ve lost your eyelashes.’
‘I hadn’t noticed. No other hair loss, though.’
Pat dodges around a car turning right. ’After my third session, so much was coming out in the shower I took a shaver to my head.’ He rubs his mop of grey hair. ‘It does grow back. Thicker, sometimes.’
When you reach home, Pat can’t stay for a cuppa. Granddaughter duties. You grip his hand. ‘Thanks again.’
‘It’s what friends do.’
Best friends since second grade. Road trips up the coast. Marriages. Children. Xmas get-togethers. Your divorce. His cancer. Now yours.
Once inside, you head for the bathroom. Dip your hands into scolding water. The tingling fades.
You look up at the notes Louise has blue-tacked to the mirror:

Wear Ugg boots on the tile floors
Do things that make you happy
Tears prick your eyes.
You go to the camera sling bags lining the top of the bookcase in your study. Not the Canon 5D Mark III. You’re tired of digital phones and cameras that allow you to snap hundreds of photos, but not one of them outstanding.
