Next in is Fair Go – he’s carrying extra weight and will struggle at the distance in this race. Then into 8 Wall of Blue, followed by Rust Belt dreamer, Pollster, Red Republic and finally Bright Hope goes into barrier 12.
All in now. Starter goes to his platform. Rocket Man still a bit fidgety. Now they’re set. And they’re racing!
First out of the barriers was Blow my Trumpet closely followed by Rocket Man, a length away to Democracy Sausage they’re followed by Fake News. Fair Go’s on the inside rail then Vive La Femme and Misogyny Star neck and neck. Going down the back strait comes Pollster on the fence - jockey’ll need to position himself to get a clean run through the pack. Wall of Blue is a bit worse than mid field waiting for a clear run but Red Republic has him all locked up in a zip fastener pocket. At the rear is Rust Belt Dreamer but don’t write him off. He could come storming home with a late run.
At the 400 metre mark, Bright Hope’s looming up and joining Wall of Blue, Fair Go and Democracy Sausage approaching the home turn. But look, here comes Blow my Trumpet. He’s under the whip but making ground around the outside, closely followed by Rocket Man and Fake News with Rust Belt Dreamer moving up strongly. Further back is Vive La Femme who’s been checked by Misogyny Star and is now bailed up on the rails. Halfway down the strait it’s anyone’s race. Blow My Trumpet, Rocket Man, Fake News and Rustbelt Dreamer and now Misogyny Star gets up between horses. Blow My Trumpet down the outside is having everything but the kitchen sink thrown at him and he’s got up. He’s won by half a head. Blow My Trumpet by half a head! Second was Rocket Man and third Fake News with Rustbelt Dreamer and Misogyny Star neck and neck in fourth place. I’d say Rustbelt Dreamer by a whisker. Then Red Rupublic, Vive la Femme and Pollster followed by short odds runners Democracy Sausage, Fair Go and Wall of Blue with Bright Hope bringing up the rear.
So there you have it, Ladies and Gentlemen - Blow My Trumpet has won the 2024 Bread & Circuses Stakes. You’ll be in the money if you had that trifecta - although we still need confirmation on fourth place. Hallo, there goes the siren indicating a protest. (Pause). Just waiting for the announcement. As predicted, Chip Shoulder has lodged a protest asserting interference by Vive La Femme at the 400 mark. Well, that’s the pot calling the kettle black but I’d still advise you to hold on to your tickets Ladies and Gentlemen.
