The evening came to its finale. Coats and bags were gathered and all filed out the door. Ariadne was the last to leave and turned to Jessica.
“You know Jessica, I just wanted to say that I’ve always admired your courage. It took guts to attempt that Tom Hitchcock recipe – I could never have done it. And, by the way, never apologise for your comments on the book, I always find them refreshing and honest. See you next month at my place.” With that, she hugged Jessica warmly and stepped out into the cold night air.
When she was alone again, Jessica felt her cheeks flush. For the first time in a long while she didn’t feel like a squeaky violin. Not quite a cello but, at the very least, a competent viola.
